what courses should a average computer user pass to be a network admin and solve computer problems in a office?

i work in a university library and have studied library and information science. my chief makes me work as a network admin to our library clent server software and solve computer problems of the library. but i am not enough trained. i can solve the problems somewhat but it is very stressful. but i am interested in completing my knowledge of computer and be familiar with network. i’ve not passed any course on computer yet.

Would a mac mini help me with my computer problems?

I have a Mac G4 laptop, but it runs fairly slowly now because it is loaded with so many pictures, and I am a writer and there is a load of Word documents in there too. A friend suggested buying a mac mini and linking the two together until I can save up enough to buy a brand new computer. Would that work? and if so, could anyone provide hints on how they would work together and how to hook them up?
