Caramel Apples as a Xmas Gift?! Help?

I am interested in making caramel apples as xmas gifts for families. Is this a good idea? For example, I want to decorate the caramel apple and put it with a cute clear bag and ribbon attached with out family holiday card… The problem is – I’ve never done caramel apples!

Do you have some examples of tasty yet easy and budget-wise recipes?

Pepperidge Farm Party Rye Bread?

My grocery store, Albertson’s, doesn’t carry this bread, or Pepperidge farm for that matter. Any suggestions on a local grocery store that would have it? UPDATE: Trader Joe’s carries a similar product seasonally. They don’t have it currently. But the Trader Joe’s employee referred me to Cost Plus World Market and I found a very similar bread that will work.
