Forced Holiday Vacation Without Pay?
November 18th, 2010
I work for a company and I was told this past Friday, that I would be working Monday and then be off from Tuesday, December 23rd-January 5th with no pay. I am a part-time employee who works around 30 hours each week and I have previously been paid for Independence Day, Labor Day, Election Day and Thanksgiving holidays.
Only 3 employees out of about 15 are part time, the rest of the staff automatically gets paid holidays and will be paid for the season, and since my boss was going on vacation, that is why they are closing the building (he is the only supervisor available).
Can a company legally close for the holiday (2 weeks) and give only one working day of notice?
Is there some type of legal advice or recourse someone could give me? I am losing 2 weeks worth of wages and I didnt have enough notice to otherwise compensate.
Any advice you could give me would be helpful!
Does the company have a legal right to only give me 1 business day of notice– even if I am not getting paid?
I forgot to add that this is only because he is going on vacation that we are closed, nothing financial or anything.
