Considering a holiday to Hawaii?

We are thinking of going to Hawaii this year around Xmas time and most of January. We have really no idea what it’s like and it was just an idea that we had. We have quite a few questions so would really appreciate the help.
We got some booklets from a travel agent and most of the hotels were around $120 – $180 per night. Can you get cheaper than that??
Which islands are the best to go to and why?? What attractions are there on each island?
We were thinking about staying for around a month or a bit less, is this too long?? We are wanting to have a few days of just relaxing but also want to do some shopping and take in the sites.
We have a 14 year old daughter. Do you think she would like it in Hawaii. She wants to go shopping and also see some tropical fish. We were thinking about snorkelling but it is around winter time when we would go so would the water be too cold?? Is there like an aquarium where she can at least see some??
