Wasn’t McCain the Senator of Arizona when they refused to recognize MLK as a holiday?

mr_cj_jr asked:

I believe that McCain was the Senator at the time when Arizona refused to recognize Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday as a National holiday.
In fact, they lost their 1st bid at a Super Bowl (later awarded AFTER they recognized MLK as a holiday) because of it.

Yet, people in here call Obama “racist”?
Hmmmm.

Thoughts?
Regarding “white” holidays: Every other holiday is a “white” holiday. Recognizing MLK’s contribution to America for ONE day shouldn’t be an issue.

Yes, and McCain apologized for that. Will he need to build a statue of MLK out of his own flesh before you forgive him?

Yes he was, and yes he will lose to Obama in November.

Last time I checked a US Senator doesn’t have any authority at the state level. Nice fishing expedition though.

Yes he was and he voted against the holiday in 1983 (over 2 decades ago) not because of race, but because of cost. He also admitted he was wrong to do so in 1999 (almost a decade ago) and apologized. Wow, what a bad person he is. I’m still waiting for Obama to leave that **** cult disguised as a church.

McCain was only echoing what his constituents believed. Many in Arizona didn’t gave one damn about MLK. He didn’t effect them one way or the other. When you make something a national holiday, you cost businesses nationwide big money in salaries and productivity. You are paying every single government employee for a day and getting nothing in return and they are paid from your tax dollars. So it is understandable.

Hmmmmmm. There are no “white” holidays.

He was the senator. however that was a public vote and had nothing do to with him. In Arizona it took away separate days for Lincoln and Washington and combined them into presidents day and then added MLK day. Which is why it was voted down by the people and later passed by the state legistlature to get the super bowl. Which I don’t know why the NFL feels the need to dictate state policy.

Clearly Washington and Lincoln both did much more for this country than MLK. Without Lincoln there may not have even been a civil rights struggle for anyone to lead. Why should one of these great men have their holiday removed or combined to be replaced by anyone else? black, white or purple? Polling at the time suggested support for an additional holiday but not the combining.

The decision of whether or not to recognize MLK day in Arizona was the responsibility of the Arizona State House, not John McCain. Good try though.

    Yes.

No one likes McCain, he cant even raise money for his campaign.

Did you know the republican campaign had to rent a smaller venue because Republicans are not coming out to support him or shell out their money?

Obama IS a ****** —-BTW- Did you know that McCain is 1 of 3 Republican Senators ( including Orin Hatch ) who has written a Resolution calling for a Presidential Pardon of Jack Johnson ( First Black Heavyweight Champion ) who was prosecuted by Federal Authorities under the Mann Act ?? Proof Positive that McCain is not ******…Hmmmmm
